Low voltage reeling cables for mobile cranes and travelling installations
A low voltage reeling cable is reeled off a cable drum while the crane or installation travels and reeled back in on return. In every cycle the cable is subjected to tensile force, bending and often torsion. Cables for this application are therefore mechanically strong, so they keep delivering power and signals even under intensive use.
Prysmian supplies these cables under the brand CORDAFLEX and as TROMMELFLEX PUR HF. They are used on mobile harbour cranes, gantry cranes and other cranes and machines that travel along a track.
Which type should you choose: XPRT, SMRT or SPCL?
- CORDAFLEX XPRT (formerly CORDAFLEX(SMK)): the premium design for high and very high mechanical loads. An E-RTG design is also available for ERTGs (electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes), also with integrated optical fibre
- CORDAFLEX SMRT (formerly CORDAFLEX(SMK)-200 and TROMMELFLEX KSM-S, among others): for versatile use, also under high loads
- CORDAFLEX SPCL (formerly CORDAFLEX(SMK) with special elements): custom-engineered cables, for example with multiple elements in one cable
- TROMMELFLEX PUR HF: for high mechanical loads and suitable for permanent use in water (not drinking water) down to 50 metres immersion depth
What to consider when choosing a reeling cable
Look at the tensile load and the travel speed of the installation. Determine the diameter of the cable drum as well, because the bending radius of the cable has to match it. Take the environment into account: wind, rain, UV radiation, low temperatures and contact with oil or chemicals. Finally, the number of cores and the required cross-section determine which design fits. These choices prevent failures and extend the service life of the cable.
The cable works together with the drum. Vijselaar therefore also supplies cable reels, spring cable reels and motor cable reels, so you can match cable and reel.
