MV reeling cables for medium voltage in moving applications

Medium voltage on a moving installation demands a lot from a cable. During reeling the cable has to absorb tensile force, bending and vibration while insulation and screening stay intact. An MV reeling cable is designed for this. Prysmian supplies these cables under the brand PROTOLON for fast-moving container cranes, among other mobile installations in ports and heavy industry.

PROTOLON XPRT, SMRT, flat and LWL designs

• PROTOLON XPRT (formerly PROTOLON(SMK) and PROTOLON(SMK+HS)): for high to extreme mechanical loads, such as high travel speeds, dynamic tensile forces and torsion
• PROTOLON SMRT (formerly PROTOLON(SMK)-200 and the TENAX family, among others): for medium mechanical loads, such as moderate travel speeds
• PROTOLON (FL): flat design for high mechanical loads, with multiple changes of direction within one plane
• LWL designs (PROTOLON XPRT-LWL, SMRT-LWL and (FL)-LWL): with integrated optical fibre for combined transmission of power and data

What to consider with a medium voltage cable

First determine the voltage level and the mechanical load: tensile force, travel speed and the bending radius of the reel. Then look at the environment, such as weather, temperature and UV radiation. Also consider the finishing and connection of the cable ends. A medium voltage cable is only dependable when cable, finishing and reel are matched to each other.

A fault in the medium voltage supply stops the crane. Choosing correctly in advance prevents this and extends the service life of the installation. Combine the cable with the right cable reel or motor cable reel.
